Could cuts in the ICT budget be looming?

April 27, 2010

Education and the way in which schools are managed are very different in England compared to America and again in France, as I’ve been finding out since I’ve been over here helping teachers with their SMARTboard learning. The point I’m making here though is that wherever you are in the world, the most important thing for a teacher is to interest and interact with your children in lessons. The first time I used my SMARTboard I knew this would be a huge turning point! With new SMARTboard technology, such as the SMARTtable coming into play for primary school children and especially helpful to children with learning disabilities it is so important that teachers are completely confident with using the technology.

The biggest news in England right now for education is the cuts in budgets which could be looming, in particular as mentioned in this BBC news article “The Conservatives have raised questions about the future of Becta, which leads the development of technology in learning. From 2008-2009 this cost an estimated £51 million.” This could be potentially devastating for the use of ICT in teaching, however it also highlights the need for more affordable ways to help teachers use the technology they already have. A previous blog post of mine mentioned the cost and hassle of training individual teachers on courses that require leaving the school, reaching into the thousands for just one teacher, it can be seen quite clearly a more affordable approach, such as an online training course would help cut spending budgets in the ICT departments by a considerable amount.

For now we can only wait and see what will happen with budgets in the UK. Love to know your thoughts on the matter….

Enhance Smart board skills with others

April 27, 2010

I had the opportunity to observe a group of teachers participating in a unique SMART board Professional Development session this week. The class was limited to seven participants and each attendee was supplied with a SMART board and laptop computer.  The teaching approach encouraged hands on learning and collaboration.  The instructor, a licensed teacher, presented each tool in the context of how it might be used in the classroom.  After this short demo, participants who arrived with their own resources were able to work alone or with a peer to develop an activity that could be applied to their teaching situation the following day. This atmosphere is great as with more people to develop a hands on approach with the SMART board. Enhancing ideas with others in a learning environment is a great way to develop your skills with less stress. Try it with a friend of a colleague.

Easily transferable SMART Notebook files

April 26, 2010

This weekend I decided to put together some Smart Board presentations for my classes for the upcoming week. I thought they were pretty cool and I decided to share them with some of my fellow teachers. Since the file is a SMART Notebook format it’s easy to send to a colleague or your students. You can quickly email a Notebook or PDF file to them by selecting “Send To -> Mail Recipient” from the file menu. It will open your email program and have the file already attached to a new message. This saves so much time!

Smart table great with kids and teachers alike

April 23, 2010

The SMART table continues to make a big splash everywhere I take it. I’m not sure what teachers are expecting when they see it, but they are usually amazed at the fact it can handle up to 40 simultaneous touch points.  It’s so amazing because the a majority of the class can participate. Kids also love it because of its fun activities and it’s pretty cool!

I generally demonstrate and have teachers participate in several activities using the Table and its at that point I can see that this tool changes the way they think about collaborative learning in the classroom.   At one school, an 8th grade teacher had his students develop activities for kids in the kindergarten class and then teach the activity to the students.  This takes the concept of “learning buddies” to a whole new level

User conferences great for developing SMART Board ideas.

April 21, 2010

Over the years of attending User conferences, I have realized that they are always exciting because of the energy level of the participants. I love the idea that teachers gather on a Saturday to share their expertise and commitment to learning more about using technology as a teaching and learning tool. At a conference I was at recently, 200 people came together to learn from their peers. These optional events always generate a lot of energy and excitement. The user conferences are also a great place to get a hands on approach with SMART boards and help enhance your skills. Remember practice makes perfect! It’s also nice to socialize, with so much formal and informal discussion throughout the day there is no question that you will pick up on ideas and techniques far quicker than learning by yourself. It’s wonderful to see that SMART boards are the catalyst for developing professional learning communities.

See you at the next conference.

White out Smartboard tip

April 20, 2010

Last weekend, socializing at a SMART Board conference I was asked by a fellow attendee…“What else can I do with my SMART board?” At the time I had no idea what features he was currently using or was aware about. I started showing him some of the many features like the screen shade tool, dual page view and some cool hyper linking techniques that you can apply to your lessons right inside SMART Notebook Software. He seemed aware of these tools so I continued to press on and showed him a few more techniques I picked up in the classroom. One of my favorite and ‘very simple’ tips is changing one of the pens color properties to white. By changing one of the pens to white you can “white out” text and or images. To slowly reveal the images, all you have to do is pick up the eraser and like magic the text or image appears! Using the pen tool to white out/erase is a great tip/trick and from my experience both teachers and students alike love to use it in lessons! With this technique you can easily create cloze activities on the fly during your lessons!

If you have a question don’t hesitate to ask me! Or maybe you have some tricks of your own?

If you do just shoot me a question or post your tip, here on my blog or on my Twitter and Facebook page.
