A flair for the arts… try acting out scenes from a play using the SMART Board

April 25, 2012

We had a great time in class last week.  The students were writing two person plays and they wanted to act them out.  We decided to perform them on the SMART Board instead.   The students created backgrounds and then made characters that they saved in “My Content” in the gallery, so that they could use them at a later date.  Using the SMART recorder, they spoke their parts and moved their characters.  On the 800 series board, they could move both characters at the same time!  It took several tries because they had so much fun that they were laughing!  Afterwards we shared our plays with the other students in the school.   We were all so proud!

Document Cameras and SMART Boards – the perfect pair

April 18, 2012

I have really loved the integration of my document camera into our work on the SMART Board.  Essentially the document camera provides live feed onto my SMART Board and enables me to show a variety of different things on the Board.  I love using it to show student work.  Once the work is on the SMART Board, I am able to discuss corrections, a job well done, make any clarifications, or even allow my student to present their work to their class (giving us on the spot presentations).  Any hard copy resources can be incorporated easily, allowing me to reuse things I have created in the past or concrete texts like black line masters, novels, books, dictionaries, and thesauruses.  A great classroom tool!

SMART Board tool: Dual Page

April 11, 2012

One of my favorite Notebook tools is dual page display.  I have integrated dual page display in my practice for times when:  I’m having my students organize content under two headings, by sliding the pictures or words across both pages; I might have some text on one side and the students are taking jot notes on the other side; I have a math question on one side and the students are answering it on the other side; and comparing or contrasting student work on both pages.  A great feature in Notebook to use!!

Using full page to avoid distractions

April 4, 2012

I teach within a specialized program for early language learners.  The work we have done on the SMART Board has been incredible for my group.  Specifically using full screen display has been helpful.  My kids are easily distracted by all the icons in the Notebook interface.  Being able to pop into full page allows them to concentrate on the content on the page a lot better.  That’s where my floating toolbar has come in handy, as I can still access my favorite Notebook tools to use on the page.
