SMART Gallery 2.0 makes SMART notebook software even more powerful!

May 30, 2012

Hi Everyone,

You know how excited I was by the launch of SMART Notebook 11.   The software makes it a lot easier to access all your favourite features, and to take advantage of new functionality.  Today I wanted to alert everyone to SMART Gallery 2.0.  You can search for resources online and offline and then download only the items you need at that time, all without leaving SMART Notebook software.    Gallery 2.0 makes SMART notebook software even more powerful.    It currently lists 15,000 items in the SMART Exchange which many SMART users don’t even know about!

The Beta version can be downloaded now from the SMART website – http://www.smarttech.com/SMARTNotebookGalleryBeta

Using Notebook Title Pages

May 23, 2012

I have been creating a lot of lessons lately and because my skills are improving, I want to share my work!  So that everyone knows what is intended in the lesson, I insert a title page from the gallery.  Search for ‘title page’ in the gallery and find them in the resulting folder called Notebook Files and Pages.  Some of them are linked files which means that you will add two or more pages to your file. Others are flash files that look like several pages but they are contained on one Notebook page.  Using these pages, I can  state my objectives for the lesson and also add teacher and lesson notes.  It is a great way for me to remember the next time I use the file, what I intended for the students to learn or review!

Word Generator activities

May 16, 2012

In the Lesson Activity Toolkit, there is a Word Generator.  We edit it to include words from our social studies and science activities.  The students touch the frog (This can be changed to a book, a globe or a box.) twice so that there are two words.  The challenge for the students is to see who can make good sentences containing those words.  If you click on the arrow at the bottom right, you can print the words to the page.  Sometimes we print several words and the students see how fast they can put them in alphabetical order.

Using Tables to encourage activities

May 9, 2012

When the students come into class, I have a table prepared in SMART Notebook.  In each cell, there is a chore, a suggestion or an activity printed.  Some cells say, “Help someone today.” or “Check the shoes.” or “Sharpen the pencils.” or “At recess, run around the playground.” Each cell is covered with a cell shade.  At first there were not enough cells for each student in the class.  This meant that stragglers didn’t get a chance to choose a cell.  After a while, they were all so prompt, I had to make a cell for each student. They actually liked getting chores!  At the end of the day, we talk about what they had to do that day, what the results were and what their suggestions were for inclusion in the table.  Following up helped them to take the assignments seriously.

SMART Board Tool: Recorder

May 2, 2012

I like to use the recorder in SMART Notebook software to record the solutions to simple problems.  As I play them to the students, we pause the recordings so that they can decide what comes next.  They can’t wait to see if they are right!
