Using Tables to encourage activities

When the students come into class, I have a table prepared in SMART Notebook.  In each cell, there is a chore, a suggestion or an activity printed.  Some cells say, “Help someone today.” or “Check the shoes.” or “Sharpen the pencils.” or “At recess, run around the playground.” Each cell is covered with a cell shade.  At first there were not enough cells for each student in the class.  This meant that stragglers didn’t get a chance to choose a cell.  After a while, they were all so prompt, I had to make a cell for each student. They actually liked getting chores!  At the end of the day, we talk about what they had to do that day, what the results were and what their suggestions were for inclusion in the table.  Following up helped them to take the assignments seriously.

Happy Learning!
