Link files or websites to offer repetition and reinforcement

June 27, 2012

Notebook software is a great way of being able to stay within one file, yet linking out to a variety of other files or internet sites.  I will often launch my Notebook file and have different internet links  embedded into the file to fantastic websites that offer more repetition and reinforcement.   A great math website is the National Library of Virtual Manipulatives for math (nlvm.usu.edu/).  The students will often gather small group around the SMART Board to interact with the digital manipulatives while taking pictures of their work using the Screen Capture Tool.  I am then able to see how they did on the website while going through the Notebook file at another time.

Customizing the Pen in the Compass

June 20, 2012

Did you know that you can customize the pen in compass tool, that Is found in the math tools in the top tool menu?  When the compass is on the screen, simply click on the pen tool in the top menu and choose a pen.  The color and style you choose will be transferred to your compass.  When I edit the pen properties so that they are different colors and styles, I have 16.5 million choices!

Student Pictures

June 13, 2012

At the beginning of the year, I initiate the document camera from the toolbar to take pictures of each student.  Once it is aimed at the student, it is zoomed into their face and I press the capture button on either the SMART Board or on the document camera.  Then I drag the resulting image into My Content in a special folder that I have created for the class pictures.  Once there, I can click on the drop down menu on the thumbnail of the picture and rename the generic title with the student’s name.  At any time, I can drag out a student picture for an attendance activity, or to place it on the page to show that this student did the work on a particular page.

Changing SMART Response Preferences

June 6, 2012

There are several options for running SMART Response.  I found them the other day when I was exploring the Response menu item in SMART Notebook.  If you click on that item, scroll down and choose Preferences.  Here you can select where you want an instant question to appear;  on a new page or on the current page.  You can also select whether results will be displayed as a pie chart or a graph.  Sometimes, I am giving a diagnostic assessment so that I will learn what my students’ prior knowledge of a topic may be.  Showing the findings can be demoralizing for some students so I like being able to hide the results when the students are finished the test.  Simply remove the check mark from the statement ‘Show the Response tab when you finish an assessment’.
