SMART Board and Document Camera lesson ideas

September 26, 2012

A while back, a teacher asked me for suggestions and ideas in using the SMART Board and Document Camera together within the classroom.  Thought I would share them with you.  These are perfect for all grade levels!

Take pictures of

  1. Classroom routines and embed the pics in Notebook.  Have the students arrange the pics in order.
  2. Items in the classroom and have the students label them.
  3. Various plants outside and identify plant parts.  Label them on the SMART Board.  Convert the handwriting to text and then use reveal objects or ‘whiteout’ to hide the words as a review.
  4. Class trips and then make a class album with comments.
  5. Students and create a seating order in the classroom.
  6. Group leaders and put them on the image dice to spin for who goes first etc.
  7. A bean plant growing in intervals of several hours to show progress
  8. Science experiments to show process
  9. Arms, legs, eyes, noses, hair etc. so that ESL students can label them and learn the language
  10. Lunches to categorize the contents in food groups.  Follow up with which food group is  most represented and why.
  11. Traffic in front of the school.  Put resulting data into a table in Notebook to show which car color/make is most popular.
  12. Items from a student speech into Notebook to make the speeches more dynamic.

The ideas are limited by yours and your students imaginations!

Using My Seating Plan

September 19, 2012

Last week, I told you how I made a seating plan.  I actually saved the page in My Content so that I could use it over and over and change it as necessary.  When I last used it, I added the teacher desk, the windows and our entry door.  Then, I rearranged the desks on the Notebook page before the students came in.  When they arrived, they had to use my map to find their seats.   I found out that some of them were not good at orienting themselves by reading such a map so we had to practice rearranging several times.  They sure had fun with that!  This proved to be useful for putting the students into new groups and to practice reading simple maps. Note:  To save a page in My Content, click on drop down menu on the page thumbnail and choose ‘Add Page to Gallery’.

Making a Seating Plan

September 12, 2012

The other day, I wanted to make a seating plan but the templates I found had the desks in rows.  My students are scattered throughout the room!  I solved this in Notebook.  I added a new page.  I chose the square from the shapes tool in the top menu.  I tapped on the edge of the shape (Since it wasn’t filled with color, I couldn’t drag on the inside of the shape.) and clicked on the drop down menu.  I chose Infinite Cloner.  Then I continually dragged from the original shape to get identical desks. When I had enough desks, I tapped on the original shape and turned off the infinite cloner.  Next, I double tapped the edge of each shape and typed in the student names.  After moving the students’ desks to the correct position in the class, I was all finished!  Note: The page looks better when the floor and desks are colored!

Printing SMART Response Questions

September 5, 2012

The speed that my students answer questions using SMART response varies greatly.  Some are quick and can’t wait for the next question to be displayed on the SMART Board.  Others are slower and groan when I want to move on.  I have found that printing out the questions allows the students to go at their preferred speed.  When the test is open in Notebook, click on Response in the top menu.  Scroll down to Print and choose questions.  You will have a paper copy that you can duplicate for the students who need it.
