Getting it Straight

April 30, 2014

I have always wished that SMART Notebook had a better and quicker alignment tool. I am so excited to see that now there is one! In Notebook 11.4, there is a new, blue, puzzle piece puzzle1 icon in the toolbar.   If you click on it, it will open eight new tools for alignment. Just select all the objects that you wish to align and then click on one of the tools. Your objects will magically align. I love it!

Learning about Birds

April 16, 2014

Last time, I wrote about recording keeping for bird watching. Once we have seen the birds, let’s expand on our knowledge about birds. Search for the word ‘bird’ in the gallery. You will find the cardinal among others. Discuss the parts of a bird, the wings, the beak, the feet and the body. Learn to label the parts of the bird. Find a picture of a bird from your area. Label the parts. Move the words away from the lines so that the students can move them into the correct positions.

Watching for Birds!

April 2, 2014

Ah! Spring at last. Let’s celebrate by watching those birds return.

In a new Notebook file, brainstorm to make a list of the birds that commonly are found in your area. Divide these into two groups. One group is present all year and another is migratory.

On a new page make a chart of the migratory birds using the table tool. Have the students begin to watch for the birds. When one is spotted, the person who sees it can record their name and the siting date in the chart.
