Discovering Shapes

March 18, 2015

We were discovering shapes in the grade one class the other day and we found a fun and easy way to do it on the interactive whiteboard. When using Notebook software, we put a graphic on our interactive whiteboard and then we traced the shapes that the students saw. We removed the graphic and they all saw that the shapes that remained. It was neat to see the pattern they made. Details of the activity are found here…

Put a picture from the neighbourhood into SMART Notebook Software. I used the camera capture toolbar from SMART Notebook to grab a picture from the street view in google maps.

  1. Lock the picture down so the students can’t move it while they trace the shapes. (See the lock feature in the drop down menu of the image.)
  2. Have the students trace the shapes that they find. We use yellow because it shows against dark backgrounds.
  3. Unlock and delete the image.
  4. The students will see the shapes remaining.

If you are working on fine motor skills, the students could trace more complicated shapes as well. For instance, trace an animal and then remove the animal picture to reveal only the drawing.

Activity Card of the Month – February 2015

February 4, 2015

Card #9 Heads or Tails

There are many ways to have students experiment with probability. I might post other ideas later but right now, here is one method. Get the card of the month which will explain how to use the coin flipper and use it with a tally chart.

The kids get really excited about predicting if it will be heads or tails and when they are right, you can hear the collective, “YES!”.

Measurement for Real!

February 26, 2014

We are onto our second week of measurement in the grade two class and Jenn is now using the ruler that is found in the math toolsMath Tool  in Notebook software.     If you click on this icon, you will see a ruler that can be dragged to the SMART Board interactive surface.

Measurement for Real

The most amazing thing she discovered is that if you pick up a pen and drag it along the top or bottom of the ruler, it makes a perfectly straight line!

Recommending Notebook Files

January 15, 2014

I would love to know which Notebook files people love.  Don’t forget to recommend the gems!  In SMART Exchange, click on the name of the activity beside the image of the file.  It will take you to a screen where you can click on ‘recommend this resource’.

Halloween-Themed SMART Board Activities

October 30, 2013

The school year got a little bit busy and hectic and wasn’t able to blog for two weeks.  Sorry everyone!  Learned so much the last few weeks and can’t wait to share them all with you.

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays of the year.  With Halloween being tomorrow, it only seemed fitting that my blog be about this holiday and fun activities that you can do for your students.

Here’s a list of some of my favorite sites for you to find and download or get ideas from for your Halloween activities.

1. Teachers Loves SMART Boards – This site has lots of ideas for games, puzzles and activities to use on the SMART Board – http://teacherslovesmartboards.com/2010/10/smartboard-halloween-resources.html/

2.  Pinterest – I Love Pinterest.  It’s such a great social tool and way to gather up all the information into one place – http://www.pinterest.com/paulajmiller/smartboard-activities/

3. SMART Exchange – Don’t forget that SMART has tons of already made up activities for you to choose from.  Just searching for the keyword “Halloween” gave me almost 300 different activities to choose from.  You can also edit these to your liking – http://exchange.smarttech.com/search.html?q=Halloween

Crayon Fun

May 29, 2013

The primary students like to record the creation of a piece of art.  They choose the crayon from the pens.  They start the page recorder which is found in the properties.  It starts recording once they touch the screen.  This student drew and labeled his plant.  It surprised me that during the playback of the video, there was no record of the student changing pens!  Try it!

This is a great activity for those children who need practice with their fine motor skills.

Fun with the Periodic Table

May 22, 2013

I have a friend who teaches high school science.  She likes the periodic table that is found in the Gallery.  (Search for periodic and look in the interactive and multimedia folder.)  Yes, you can find periodic tables online but in her school, internet is slow so science sites are not a good alternative.

Click on each element to read about the properties.  Find the metals (I didn’t realize there were so many of these!).  Check out the groups.  The students will have fun with the Find the Elements game.

For those of you who want to find a more sophisticated table, make a link to this one on a Notebook page.      www.ptable.com

Sound Advice

May 15, 2013

I like to use some of the pictures that include sound but the speaker icon is too small and it is also distracting.  Therefore I choose to make the object create the sound.

Try getting one of the sound images from the Gallery.

Select it and click on the drop down menu.

Choose sound.

Change the option from corner icon to object.

Click on Attach Sound.

sound-advice2

You now have a larger surface that produces sound and children can experience cause and effect.  You might get them working on which thing makes sound!

Spelling Fun with Fridge Magnets

May 8, 2013

We have been having a lot of fun with the fridge magnets activity that is found in SMART Notebook.  Search for fridge in the Gallery and look in the Interactive and Multimedia folder.

We put the screen in dual page mode.  One student creates a word by dragging the letters onto the playing surface and then whoever else is playing, tries to write as many words as they can in two minutes.  They can even check the spelling by recognizing the words as text and looking to see if there is a wiggly red line under the letters.  If there is, they can correct it by right clicking on the word.

This makes a fun learning activity center in our classroom!

Our Class Trip Follow-Up

April 10, 2013

After we go on class trips, we have a lot of photographs.  Putting them into SMART Notebook gives us many opportunities for language development.  Just open Notebook and then click on Insert in the top menu.  Choose Picture file.  We used to worry about the pictures being too big but now the program will ask if you want to optimize the graphic and it will adjust the picture to fit the screen.  Even so, I like to make it a bit smaller so that there is room for text under the picture.

Working together on each page of Notebook, we put a sentence that describes the photograph so it reminds us of each part of our trip.  We practice reading it and sometimes we will print it out so that students can take turns reading it to others.  The older students have worked on our presentations too!  They help the younger students use the recorder in Notebook 11 to read each page so that there is a permanent audio book for anyone to look at and listen to.
