One Purposeful Assignment

June 21, 2017

Notebooks Activity Lab is great isn’t it? The games are colourful and easy to use.  Even better, from the teacher perspective, completion takes only a few minutes and the content can be geared to classroom curriculum and student abilities.

Have you thought about challenging your students to create games that address a particular subject and that will meet the needs of children in the lower grades?  How much fun would it be for a student to make the activity, push it out to the student’s devices and then watch as they play the games that they made.   Peer feedback about the activities would drive the student creators to improve the content and to be more specific about addressing needs.

Accessing Notebook 17

June 7, 2017

You have probably heard that Notebook 17 is out.  If you are presently using a version of Notebook, it will not update automatically.  You will have to go to the smarttech.com website to download it and you will have to have administration rights on your computer to install the program.  This may mean that your IT department will have to do it for you.  They probably have a plan for rolling out the new software and this means you may have to wait until the fall to try out the new features.  However, if you want to explore these at home, download the trial version of Notebook 17.  Here is the link to the download page… https://education.smarttech.com/en/products/notebook/download

In future blogs I will be talking about Notebook 17’s new features.

SMART Exchange for SMART lab activities

May 24, 2017

SMART Learning Suite is an integrated educational software platform designed to enable natural and collaborative learning experiences.

SMART lab gives teachers the means to quickly build game-based activities that amaze and engage students on their devices or front-of-room display.

Check out the SMART Exchange for the lab activities that people are uploading.  At the American site there are now 1,187 activities.  While they are very simple to create, this is a great place to get ideas or see how these activities work.  Don’t forget to upload your creations to the SMART Exchange by clicking on Share a Resource at the top of the screen.  While they can always adapt American or other countries’ resources, we are calling on Canadians to share more of their creations on this rich resource site.

Watch how easy it is

Create activities using your own lessons in a few minutes. It’s that simple and customizable, and will delight students.

101 Novel Ideas: Inspiration for the tired teacher

May 10, 2017

This just caught my eye… “101 Novel Ideas: Inspiration for the tired teacher” from the TES website (www.tes.com/teaching-resources). I was thinking about the use of technology in conjunction with reading and so combined the (mainly writing) activities with Notebook.

1. The students could illustrate a passage from their story and then have a sound button so that non-readers could hear the student’s description.  This would take planning and a script!

2. Use maps.google.com to find the area described in the book and then drop down to street level to drive around.  Use the screen capture tool to grab a picture of a school, church or store, place it on a Notebook page and then explain why (using text or a sound byte) the character might be there.

3. With permission, take pictures of classmates and add them to one Notebook page.  Label each as a character from a novel and then use the sound recorder to have the participants explain why they were chosen.  This will avoid any negative comments by the creator of the page.

Once complete, all of these would be great activities to share with others.

Another Fun Widget

February 22, 2017

A little while ago, I wrote about the Widgets on the SMART Exchange. Here is one that can be downloaded and there is a video that demonstrates creative uses.

Download the Random Words Slot Machine and see the video at http://tinyurl.com/randomwordsslotmachine.

You cannot add or change words but that did not matter to my students because we had fun using the ones that were available.  Some of them tried to see how quickly they could draw the pictures of the words when the appeared.  Two could work together on our flat panel SMART Board.  Then they compared the ideas in their images.  It was amazing how different they were.  It shows that when people hear words, they can all picture them differently.

What do you picture when you think of a tree?  What does your friend picture?

Widgets for your Notebook Files on the SMART Exchange

February 8, 2017

Have you checked out the Widgets on the SMART Exchange site?

Go to exchange.smarttech.com (Note:  A shortcut can be found in Notebook.)   Scroll down the column at the left on the search page.  You will see 3D content, manipulatives, Gallery collections etc.  Click on Widgets.  Now to the right you will see all the widgets that are available.

Many teachers like the piano for the music curriculum, the math tool for practising coordinates or the six thinking hats. I like the trash can.  When you download it, you are asked if you want to open or save it.  I open it and soon a new Notebook file will open with the trash at the top left.  Now if there is something on the page that you or the students don’t want, you can drag it into the trash.  I save the page in My Content so that it is handy for other files that I build.

Writing Math Functions in Notebook

December 7, 2016

We have some happy math teachers in our school!  In the past it was not possible to write math functions with powers and symbols unless math tools were installed in Notebook.  Now teachers can click on the Add ons (puzzle piece) in the top toolbar and activate Insert Equation icon which is an Epsilon and pen icon.  A new windows opens on the page and you can handwrite the equation.  Once you are finished, click the check mark to place the typed equation on the Notebook page.  Note that at this time, this does not allow you to solve the equation.  SMART is constantly evolving and maybe we will see this in the future?

More Student Involvement in Notebook 16.1

November 9, 2016

We are so happy with the changes that SMART has made to Notebook.  It is far more interactive and so much less teacher centred than it used to be.  At first we didn’t notice that there was something new in the SMART Lab activities.  However, finally we saw that we were able to share these activities with students via their internet enabled devices.  The teacher makes the activities and then starts them the same way that they do with Shout it Out.  The students can then work on the activities as individuals or with a partner.

For more information about this, see pages 130 and 131 in the SMART Notebook 16.1 user’s guide.  Find it at http://tinyurl.com/mynb16-1.

Hallowe’en Fun for Primary Students

October 27, 2016

We are having a lot of fun on our SMART Board this week as the board has been one of our activity centres in kindergarten.  The students are painting Hallowe’en pictures on a black background… very spooky!  When each student has made a picture, our educational assistant, Katie, is going to have them use the Notebook sound recorder to capture their voices reading the sentences.   She will embed the sound so that when the students touch the sentence, they will hear the reading.  For the next two weeks, we will listen to each student’s recording and then have the students read the sentences by themselves.  This is a great choral reading activity.

To do this activity, create a black background in Notebook on the number of pages required for each child to have one. The students use the paintbrush tool to create a Hallowe’en “painting”.  Use the Chiller font in orange to type their story.   Note: Do not print this out as the black background consumes a lot of printer ink and you will not be able to hear the voices!

YouTube and Notebook 16

October 19, 2016

There are some great videos on Youtube that I love to use in the classroom but it is a distraction for the students to sit and wait while I navigate to the videos.  Now using Youtube is so much easier!  There is a Youtube search in Notebook 16.  You will find this by clicking on the puzzle piece in the tabs area of Notebook.

  • Click on the red Youtube icon and then click on Search.
  • Type in any topic that might correlate with your present curriculum.
  • You can watch the chosen video at that moment or you can select the video and click on Add Video.

Each time you arrive at that page, the video loads from Youtube.  When I typed in Platypus, I got videos from a zoo, songs, informational videos and even one video that showed how to draw a platypus.  There were a few videos in the 300 found that were not animal related but they were easy to skip.  Try out the Youtube search.   Notebook just keeps on getting better!
