Adding a PDF file to SMART Notebook 17

June 20, 2018

If you have a SMART Board in your classroom, you may already know that you can write on PDF files.  But, what if you want to highlight, spotlight, magnify, or use a screen shade?   Maybe you would like to add blank pages or games to the file.  Many of us are accommodating this by using the PDF files within Notebook.  It is easy!  Just follow these steps.

  1. Open the PDF file in Acrobat Reader or similar PDF program.
  2. Click on File in the top menu.
  3. Click on Print.
  4. Scroll until you see ‘SMART Notebook Document Writer’.
  5. Decide which pages you want printed.
  6. Click Print.
  7. You are presented with 3 options
  8. Choose a. We will discuss options b and c in a future blog.
  9. The file will open in Notebook. Each PDF page will appear in a new page in Notebook.

This is a flat file.  You will not be able to edit it although you can drag to make it larger or smaller.  One thing I have found is that it is best to move the resulting text/graphics up and then lock them down to make sure they remain in place.

The GREAT news is that you can print any page into Notebook… from internet web pages, to Outlook calendars.  Try it out and engage your students with additional tools.

Importing PowerPoint Files into SMART Notebook Software 17

June 6, 2018

Many teachers have created PowerPoint presentations to deliver the content of their lessons.  In the last blog, I mentioned the SMART Ink toolbar that is found in PowerPoint’s slideshow mode.  It adds more functionality but we can allow even more interactivity if we import the PowerPoint file into Notebook.  Here are the steps:

  1. Open Notebook.
  2. Click on File in the top menu.
  3. Click on Import.
  4. Navigate to the PowerPoint you want to use.
  5. Click Open.

Soon a new Notebook file will open.  If there were 5 pages in your PowerPoint, there will be 5 Notebook pages.  The backgrounds and all the text will there and you will be able to rearrange them as you wish.  Now you can add Youtube videos, graphics, links, and sound and you will be able to use the spotlight, screen shade, and magnifier.   You will also be able to add a game, access Shout it Out for instant student feedback, and deliver a quiz to gauge student understanding of your topic.  The good news is that you can do all this from one program… SMART Notebook (17).

In the next blog, find out how to add a PDF file to Notebook.

Using PowerPoint on the SMART Board

May 23, 2018

When I was in the local high school the other day, I noticed that a couple of teachers were using PowerPoint on their SMART interactive flat panels.  They were happy to tell me some good news.  They discovered that when they are in slideshow mode, there is a small toolbar that allows them to enhance their presentations. This permits them to ink their presentations, highlight important words, and add pages.  Adding pages to a PowerPoint presentation allows them to conduct a brainstorming session, make notes about a discussion or create quick illustrations or diagrams.  The art teacher was using a blank page to show perspective and the geography teacher’s students were brainstorming the influences of natural phenomena on their daily lives.

Find out more about the PowerPoint toolbar here.

For even more interactivity, see the next blog about importing PowerPoint presentations into SMART Notebook software.

So… You are really sick and you can’t get into work!

January 31, 2018

You probably know what it is like when you are too sick to go to your classroom but you have to get a lesson plan into your supply teacher.  A fabulous new feature of the SMART Board (SB) with integrated IQ makes it possible for you to send your work from home directly to the SB.  When the supply teacher walks in, the students can make sure the board is on and the files will all be there ready to use.  This also works for you so that you can prepare ahead of time.  See the instructions here.

SMART Notebook Files and SMART Activities are all fully interactive in the Notebook player which is found in the IQ mode.  Here is a link to a ‘how to’ so that you can start using the feature right away.  In the next blog I will explain how to send and use non-SMART files.

The SMART Learning Suite Online

January 17, 2018

SMART has responded to teachers’ requests to get Notebook online, and so this week I have been experimenting with suite.smarttech.com.  This site allows you to create quizzes and Lab activities and/or upload Notebook files from your computer, and share them all with students on internet-enabled devices such as iPads or Chromebooks.

Yes, you do need Notebook on your computer if you want to create new Notebook files or customize the ones you download from SMART Exchange.  However, you DO NOT need Notebook installed on the computer that is accessing The SMART Learning Suite online.    There is no ability to create Notebook files once you are in The SMART Learning Suite Online and editing them is limited to erasing pen marks and moving objects around the screen.   This is a positive aspect since it allows the interface to remain uncluttered and easy to learn.

I uploaded several files and was happy to see that the Activity Lab files that I made worked perfectly and that static pages looked the same as they did on my local computer.  Youtube videos that I had embedded loaded quickly and they filled my screen.  A minor downside is that 3D objects appeared but I could not manipulate them and while I have not tried all the widgets, I suspect that they will not work online because I tried the spinner, customizable dice and timer and a message appeared saying that they were not supported.  These are small niggles that SMART may address in the future.

With this suite, you can easily give students access to your content and then see the students who are online with you.  You can even disconnect them if you wish! If you suddenly decide you need a page for brainstorming or illustrating a point, one click gives you a blank canvas.  A huge bonus is the ability to press one button and start a Shout it Out session with the participating students.  Both these aspects make the whole experience dynamic!

What do I love about The SMART Learning Suite online?  It is simple, effective, all-inclusive and teachers can learn to use it in ten minutes.  That is my idea of SMART!

SMART Activity Lab has Options!

September 13, 2017

By now, you have probably had some experience with Match ‘Em Up and Flip Out, found in the Activity Lab in Notebook.  The latest versions of Notebook have provided some improvements that you may want to explore.

When you click on any option in the Activity Lab, note the lines next to the question mark at the top right.  Click on those lines and then click on Create New.  Now you have choices including Matched Pairs, Single List, Quiz or Student List.   Choose Matched Pairs to add a list of words and pictures.

Note that the pictures have to be accessible from a file as you do not have access to the Gallery.  Once you save your lists, you can add them to Flip Out or Match ‘Em Up by clicking on the blue lines/plus sign near the top right of the window for those activities!  How cool is that?  Two activities are made with the effort it takes to make one!  I love SMART Notebook!

I made a simpler url so that you can find instructions for SMART Lab Activities.  Have fun creating!  http://tinyurl.com/activity-lab-instructions

Kapp IQ to SMART Notebook 17

August 30, 2017

Did you know??

You can now transfer drawings and notes from Kapp IQ to SMART Notebook 17!  When I heard about this, I wanted to try it so that students could polish their work and print it out if they wished.  However, I could not find instructions for the process… not saying they aren’t there.  I just couldn’t find them!  So, the other day, I spent some time experimenting and it is easy.  I have made illustrated instructions for you.   Granted they include 14 steps but after you do it a few times, it will make sense and you will be able to do it blindfolded…  well not quite blindfolded but the point is, it won’t take long.

One thing that you will need is the KAPP Add-on for SMART Notebook.  Get it here…  http://go.smarttech.com/notebook-kapp.  It will be added to the Add-Ons (puzzle piece) tab that includes Image Web Search, You Tube, SMART Blocks etc. in SMART Notebook 17.  If you don’t see it there, click on Add-Ons in the top menu and then click on Manage Add-ons…  Finally, click on SMART Kapp to ensure it is enabled and click Done.

Let me know if you have any questions about the installation or the process I described in the instruction pdf. Click here to see it.

SMART IQ

August 2, 2017

What a great name for a new product; SMART IQ.  Intelligent but simple to use, this is an appliance that can be purchased with many of the new SMART Boards.  Adding it means that you can access internet, load Notebook files, run SMART Lab activities, cast from a tablet or computer and use your SMART Board as a white board that allows you to save notes…  all WITHOUT a computer attached.  Think of these scenarios.  You planned a lesson but your computer has been sent in for service.  You can use SMART IQ!  A planning time teacher wants to use your SMART Board but you need to use your computer.  No problem!  You want your students to work on an AMP activity but you need to make computer notes about the small student group who are working with you.   Detach your computer from the SMART Board and using IQ access internet to start AMP.

Great News for SMART Response Users

July 5, 2017

Some of our teachers were reluctant to update to Notebook when they learned that it no longer supported SMART Response.   Now they can!  SMART has been busy ensuring that response quizzes and formative assessments made in the original Response will now convert to Response 2.

I tried it and here’s how it works.  Open Notebook 17.  In the main menu, click on File and Open.  Navigate to your original Response quiz/test/assessment and watch as the file is automatically converted to Response 2.  You will get a message that a new activity is being made from your file and all pages in the file that were not part of the question set will remain the same.   Next you will see your original file and this may confuse you at first!  Scroll to the end of your response questions and the quiz will automatically load in SMART Response 2!   Once I saw that the test was running in Response 2, I deleted the pages from the original file.

I found out that any pictures from my original test did not appear in the updated file so I edited the new test to insert them into each question.  Note that you will not be able to drag the pictures from the original file because they are not in the correct format.  Use the capture tool to save them as individual jpg files.  Then insert these newly created picture files into your Response 2 quiz.  Math question types are not supported and there is a limit of 150 characters for the question text.   Otherwise, I am a happy camper!

SMART Exchange for SMART lab activities

May 24, 2017

SMART Learning Suite is an integrated educational software platform designed to enable natural and collaborative learning experiences.

SMART lab gives teachers the means to quickly build game-based activities that amaze and engage students on their devices or front-of-room display.

Check out the SMART Exchange for the lab activities that people are uploading.  At the American site there are now 1,187 activities.  While they are very simple to create, this is a great place to get ideas or see how these activities work.  Don’t forget to upload your creations to the SMART Exchange by clicking on Share a Resource at the top of the screen.  While they can always adapt American or other countries’ resources, we are calling on Canadians to share more of their creations on this rich resource site.

Watch how easy it is

Create activities using your own lessons in a few minutes. It’s that simple and customizable, and will delight students.
